Reid Abrams, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic and hand surgeon. He is chief of Hand and Microvascular Surgery and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Abrams' expertise includes treating severe upper limb trauma; nerve injuries; tendon injuries; arthritis of the elbow wrist and hand; carpal tunnel syndrome; Dupuytren's contracture; as well as fractures and sports injuries of the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand.

Strongly believing in the mission of UC San Diego Health, Dr. Abrams is dedicated to caring for the underinsured. He also treats patients who have sustained severe upper limb trauma at the county’s first Level 1 Trauma Center.

Dr. Abrams serves as medical director of UC San Diego Health's Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion Surgical Center and Ambulatory Orthopedics Clinic, a member of UC San Diego Health's Leadership Council and Academy of Clinician Scholars.

He has been in Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Doctors, and has been recognized as one of San Diego’s “Top Doctors" by San Diego Magazine for more than a decade. Dr. Abrams has also been ranked in the top one percent of hand surgeons by US News and World Report. In 2017, he received the San Diego Orthopedic Society Founding Father Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Abrams has also been recognized as an outstanding educator, receiving the UC San Diego Resident Teaching award on four occasions from the Orthopaedic Surgery Department and two occasions from the Division of Plastic Surgery. As a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, he trains post-residency graduates through a highly sought after fellowship training program in Hand and Microvascular Surgery. His research has focused on upper extremity functional anatomy, peripheral nerve and tendon repair and elbow biomechanics. He has been a regional, national and international invited lecturer.

Dr. Abrams completed his fellowship work in pediatric orthopedics at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego and his hand surgery training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital at Harvard School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency and earned his medical degree at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and hand surgery.

Dr. Abrams enjoys spending time with his family, skiing, bicycling, backpacking, western horseback riding and traveling.

Suraj A. Achar, MD, is a board-certified family medicine doctor who specializes in sports medicine. His expertise includes diagnosing, treating and preventing injuries associated with athletics. He is highly experienced in ultrasound guided diagnostics and procedures. Dr. Achar also provides primary care for patients of all ages, including preventive care and treatment of acute and chronic diseases.

He has repeatedly been named a top doctor in San Diego Magazine’s “Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society.

Dr. Achar is the head team physician for the San Diego Sockers and a team physician for UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics, Canyon Crest Academy and Kearny High School. He is also one of the medical directors for the California State Games, an amateur youth competition involving 5,000 athletes in 20 sports. Additionally, he has a joint appointment at Rady Children’s Hospital, where he works with children in the 360 Sports Medicine program.

As a professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Achar is involved in training medical students, residents and fellows. His research work includes clinical trials related to sports medicine. He is especially interested in anabolic steroid use in children, adolescents and professional athletes.

Dr. Achar is the associate program director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He also teaches physicians from around the country at the American Academy of Family Physicians Scientific Assemblies and UC San Diego’s Physician Assessment and Clinical. Education (PACE) Program, where he focuses on the law in medicine.

Dr. Achar was inspired to become a physician after learning about the work of Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization. After completing medical school, he spent six months in Kenya as part of the program, providing medical care to children amid war and poverty. Dr. Achar feels the most rewarding aspect of being a physician is "having the opportunity to really make a difference when it counts."

He completed his residency and fellowship training at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Achar earned his medical degree at State University of New York Buffalo School of Medicine and is board-certified in family medicine and sports medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians (FAAFP).

Dr. Achar played high school tennis and soccer and was a member of the intercollegiate soccer team at University of Poitiers in France. He continues to play and coach soccer, and stays fit through running and strength training. When not at work, Dr. Achar spends as much time as possible with his wife, Suriti, and his three sons, Ravi, Jivan and Rohan.

Kamyar Afshar, DO, is a board-certified pulmonary and critical care physician who specializes in complex lung diseases and lung transplantation. His expertise includes treating cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, as well as rare lung diseases such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and tuberous sclerosis complex.

As an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Afshar instructs medical students, residents and fellows. His research interests include cystic fibrosis and lung transplant medicine.

He has published numerous articles, and his work has appeared in Annals of Transplantation and CHEST, among others. Dr. Afshar also reviews for numerous medical journals and serves as a contributing editor for Journal of Pulmonary and Respiratory Medicine.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Afshar was an assistant professor at Keck School of Medicine of USC and director of the Center for Advanced Lung Disease. Dr. Afshar also served as the medical director of the Pediatric Lung Transplant Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Dr. Afshar completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine and a residency in internal medicine at LAC + USC Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Midwestern University’s Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Afshar is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine.

He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplant, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, among others.

Dr. Afshar grew up in San Diego and attended Patrick Henry High School. He and his wife, Parastoo, have a daughter and a son.

Natalie Afshari, MD is accomplished as a clinician, surgeon, and a research scientist. Dr. Afshari’s achievement in cornea and refractive surgery and overall patient care has been recognized by her peers in several of the “best doctors" lists, including “The Best Doctors in America" in each listing for the past decade. Furthermore, Dr. Afshari was awarded the academic Achievement Award and the Secretariat Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has consulted Dr. Afshari’s expertise for matters of safety and efficacy of various ophthalmologic treatments. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has honored Dr. Afshari by awarding her and her collaborators extensive grant support to study Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy, a genetic disorder leading to corneal transplantation.

In her clinical practice, Dr. Afshari specializes in cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, descemets stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK), intacs for keratoconus, laser refractive surgery, including LASIK, LASEK/Advanced Surface Ablation, PRK, PTK, and treating surgical and medical diseases of cornea. She is a highly skilled cataract surgeon and holds national positions on the professional committees of cataract specialists, including serving as the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery’s representative on the Council of the American Academy Ophthalmology. Dr. Afshari is also a recognized expert in corneal transplantation and refractive surgery and has successfully treated many complex cases referred to her by other leading surgeons.

In addition to her success with patients, Dr. Afshari has published extensively in both medical journals and textbooks. She is the co-editor of a two volume cornea book titled Principles and Practice of Cornea. While her textbook chapters focus on clinical skills, her journal articles report her innovations and findings in research. Her research has won multiple honors, including the prestigious Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) award and the Heed Foundation Ophthalmic Award. Additionally, Dr. Afshari performs sight-restoring procedure using keratoprosthesis, a synthetic plastic-based artificial cornea which has been featured nationally on television news programs.

Dr. Afshari’s dedication to research and clinical care also inspires her teaching. For her commitment to teaching and training ophthalmologists, she has received the Teacher of the Year award at Duke University Eye Center. She also has been invited to lecture nationally and internationally and is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Board-Certified Ophthalmologist). Dr. Afshari’s peers also elected her to the cornea program committee and Awards committee of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), which oversees the scientific program of the largest eye research association in the world. She is also the Chief Judge for the scientific posters of American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Several scientific and scholarly journals have sought Dr. Afshari’s expertise and recognized her research leadership by naming her to their editorial boards or seeking her assistance in reviewing the work of other scientists. She is the editor of the Current Opinion in Ophthalmology cataract section and has served on the editorial board of EyeNet magazine, a journal published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. She is also a reviewer for a number of scientific journals including: Ophthalmology; American Journal of Ophthalmology; Archives of Ophthalmology; Cornea, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science; Molecular Vision, Experimental Eye Research; Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery; and Human Mutation.
