About Michael Self, MD
Michael Self, MD is a board-certified emergency medicine and critical care medicine physician. He treats people of all ages in the emergency department setting, including those with life-threatening or critical conditions, and critically ill adults in the intensive care unit. An expert in resuscitation, he serves as director the emergency department's advance resuscitation training program at UC San Diego Health.
As an instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Self is involved in the training and education of medical students, residents, and fellows. He is a member of the ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) committee as well as the education committee for the department. His interests include clinical education, resuscitative transesophageal echocardiography, lung protective mechanical ventilation and advanced cardiac arrest management.
Dr. Self completed fellowship training in anesthesia critical care medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he also completed residency training in emergency medicine. He served as chief resident and was awarded resident teacher of the year in his final year of residency and received the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine Fellow Award in Critical Care in his final year of fellowship. He earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honors society.
He is an avid surfer and spends much of his free time enjoying the outdoors with his family.
