Rodney A. Gabriel, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management specialist who offers acute and chronic pain care at UC San Diego Health. Dr. Gabriel actively treats patients with chronic post-surgical pain with ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve cryoneurolysis and neuromodulation. This has helped several patients with pain conditions such as post-mastectomy pain syndrome, postherpetic neuralgia, chronic rib fracture pain, phantom limb pain after amputation, and post-thoracotomy pain syndrome.
He is vice-chair of perioperative informatics and clinical director of anesthesiology at Koman Outpatient Pavilion Ambulatory Surgery Center.
Dr. Gabriel is an associate professor of anesthesiology and associate adjunct professor of biomedical informatics at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research expertise is in applying artificial intelligence concepts into perioperative medicine including machine learning-based predictive modeling and natural language processing. His research focus is on designing predictive models around opioid addiction, critical care medicine, operating room efficiency, perioperative optimization and social determinants of health.
He completed fellowships in regional anesthesia and acute pain, and biomedical informatics at UC San Diego School of Medicine. While at UC San Diego, he also completed a master's degree in clinical research. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women's Hospital, and earned his medical degree from UC San Francisco School of Medicine.
Dr. Gabriel is a fellow of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
