Andrew Hurvitz, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty certification in sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). He specializes in the management and arthroscopic/surgical treatment of complex sports-related injuries affecting the shoulder, hip and knee. He has expertise in treating a multitude of orthopedic conditions including instability and rotator cuff tears of the shoulder, anterior cruciate and multi-ligament knee injuries, patella instability, cartilage/meniscal injuries of the knee, and femoroacetabular impingement of the hip.
Aside from delivering top-quality orthopedic care, Dr. Hurvitz is committed to treating patients with the utmost compassion, humility and care. As someone who maintains a physically active lifestyle, he understands the desire to return to activity in the face of an unexpected injury.
A Navy veteran with over 20 years of dedicated military service, Dr. Hurvitz brings a breadth of unique clinical experience to the UC San Diego Health team. He also serves as a team physician for the UC San Diego Tritons. His wife, also a Navy veteran, is currently a pulmonologist with the respiratory division at Rady Children's Hospital.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Hurvitz served as the chief of the Orthopaedic Surgical Sports Division at the Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD), where he also served as core teaching faculty for the residency program. He received numerous hospital accolades and was appointed an associate master clinician for advanced clinical productivity. He was also the head team orthopedic surgeon for the west coast-based Naval Special Warfare (SEAL/SWCC) teams.
Dr. Hurvitz has presented at various orthopedic society conferences/courses and is active in research with multiple publications on sports-related topics. He is a reviewer for two leading orthopedic sports journals. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and is also an active member of multiple national and regional orthopedic societies including the Arthroscopic Association of North America (AANA), American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine (AOSSM), Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS), and the San Diego Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Hurvitz completed a sports fellowship at Kaiser Permanente San Diego. After he completed orthopedic residency training at NMCSD, he was stationed as a staff orthopedic surgeon at the US Naval Hospital in Okinawa, Japan for two years. He earned his medical degree at the F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, where he was awarded Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) honors. Prior to medical school, Dr. Hurvitz spent the first five years of his naval career as a line officer and graduated from the US Naval Academy.
Outside of work, Dr. Hurvitz enjoys being outdoors, in the water, and spending time in beautiful San Diego with his wife and two children.
