Preethika Ekanayake, MD, is a board-certified endocrinologist who provides care for patients with thyroid issues including thyroid cancer, adrenal issues (adrenal insufficiency and Cushing syndrome), pituitary illnesses, osteoporosis, metabolic bone diseases and diabetes.
Dr. Ekanayake believes in whole person care and follows evidence-based medicine in her approach to diagnosis and management of endocrine illnesses.
As an assistant professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, she trains medical students, residents and fellows in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. She teaches medical school courses in physical exam skills and clinical interviewing for first- and second-year medical students. She enjoys practicing medicine in the academic health system where she is able to train and educate future physicians and learn from a wide array of patients.
Dr. Ekanayake has military experience as a brigade surgeon in the California Army National Guard. She also practiced as a hospital medicine physician at Kaiser Permanente, San Diego, before joining UC San Diego Health. She still occasionally practices hospital medicine at UC San Diego Health, caring for hospital-admitted patients.
She completed fellowship training in endocrinology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where she also completed a residency in internal medicine. Dr. Ekanayake earned her medical degree from UC Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento and her undergraduate degree in neurosciences from UC Los Angeles. She is board certified in internal medicine and endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism.
In her free time, Dr. Ekanayake enjoys yoga, meditation, traveling around the globe with her husband, and spending time with her dogs. She speaks English and Sinhala fluently, has moderate fluency in Spanish and is currently learning French.
