About Hideaki L. Tanaka, MD, FACEP
Hideaki L. Tanaka, MD, specializes in emergency medicine, hyperbaric medicine and wound care. In addition to patient care he provides in the emergency room, he also treats conditions such as air and gas embolisms, decompression sickness, surgical flap salvage and non-healing wounds. He believes in a patient-centered approach, melding evidence-based medicine with experience to provide the best care.
As an instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, he enjoys training medical students, residents and fellows in hyperbaric medicine and wound care. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 2019, Dr. Tanaka served in the United States Air Force where he gained experience in emergency, aerospace, dive, military and special operations medicine. He held multiple positions as an emergency medicine physician, a flight surgeon, a dive medical officer, a pararescue medical director, and medical director of an elite specialized military training center with emphasis on human performance optimization.
Dr. Tanaka completed fellowship training in hyperbaric medicine from UC San Diego School of Medicine and residency training from Wright State University/Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. He earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md.
Dr. Tanaka is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. He is also a member of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Special Operations Medical Association. He is board certified in emergency medicine.
