Ravinder Mittal, MD, is a board certified gastroenterologist with specialized training in gastrointestinal motility. Dr. Mittal leads UC San Diego's GI motility and physiology program. He focuses his practice on the accurate diagnosis and treatment of achalasia, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal diverticula, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernia, nutcracker esophagus, diffuse esophageal spasm, gastroparesis, idiopathic vomiting, rapid gastric emptying, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and fecal incontinence.
His clinical and research interests are in the area of gastrointestinal motility related disorders with special focus on the swallowing disorders, esophageal disorder, problems related to the anorectum and pelvic floor disorders. He has NIH funded research programs in the area of esophageal motor and sensory function as well as pelvic floor disorder as they relate to anorectal function. As a professor of medicine, Dr. Mittal is involved in training medical students, residents and fellows in gastroenterology.
Before UC San Diego, Dr. Mittal was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Dr. Mittal did his fellowship work at Yale New Haven Hospital and earned his medical degree at Maulana Azad Medical College, Dehli University.
