About Richard Schwab, MD
Richard Schwab, MD, is a board-certified medical oncologist who specializes in treating breast cancer. As needed, Dr. Schwab treats women with endocrine therapy and/or chemotherapy. These treatments can be used to reduce the risk of breast cancer spreading to other parts of the body and can help allow for breast conserving surgery. He also provides medications that can be used to improve the lives of patients with breast cancer that has spread elsewhere in the body.
Dr. Schwab is an active researcher interested in applying the latest advances in cancer research to the benefit of his patients. He is a professor in the Department of Medicine, where he instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
His clinical and laboratory research is focused on developing new biological markers of cancer. In the future these markers may help; (1) determine who is at increased risk of developing breast cancer, (2) diagnose breast cancer early and (3) select the least toxic and most effective treatments for breast cancer. Dr. Schwab receives research funding from the National Institutes of Health and several private, non-profit cancer foundations.
Dr. Schwab completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology and a residency in internal medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is board certified in medical oncology.
