About Hope Gunther, MSN, CNM
Hope Gunther, MSN, is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) who provides family-centered maternity care, along with well-woman care, family planning and other services. She delivers babies in our holistic, in-hospital birth center or in the traditional labor and delivery environment, depending on the desires and needs of her patients. She has a special interest in attachment parenting, breastfeeding and tandem nursing, and vegetarian pregnancy.
In January 2008, she proudly celebrated her thousandth birth attended. Ms. Gunther believes that pregnancy is a sacred time in a woman's life. A woman's labor and birth are important parts of her life story and she is proud of all of the options that we offer patients - from the lowest technology to the highest, from hydrotherapy and aromatherapy to epidural anesthesia. She feels privileged to help women and their families during this transformative journey into parenthood.
As a midwife, Ms. Gunther wants to support women in having the birth experience they desire and to achieve healthy and satisfying outcomes.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 1999, she worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. As part of her midwifery education, she trained at a free-standing birth center in rural Texas where she had the opportunity to learn about unmedicated, out-of-hospital labor and birth.
Ms. Gunther earned her certificate in midwifery and her Master of Science degree in nursing from Yale University.
When not at work, she enjoys reading, sewing and making eco-friendly preschool crafts. She is a vegetarian and committed environmentalist. Her two young sons were born at UC San Diego Health with the midwifery service.
