About Brian Clay, MD

Brian Clay, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician who specializes in caring for hospitalized patients. As a hospitalist, Dr. Clay is assigned to patients at the time of admission and provides care only during their hospital stay. He does not see patients at outpatient clinics and is not available for appointments. Upon a patient's discharge, Dr. Clay communicates with their regular physician to ensure quality care.

Dr. Clay served as the chief medical information officer for UC San Diego Health from 2012 to 2022, and now serves as the associate chief medical officer for inpatient care and hospital operations. He is an associate program director for the UC San Diego clinical informatics fellowship.

As a professor in the Department of Medicine, he instructs medical students, residents, and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

He completed an internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn. Dr. Clay earned his medical degree from UC San Diego School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine with a focused practice in hospital medicine.
