About Tissa Hata, MD

Tissa Hata, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and clinical service chief and director of the UC San Diego Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit.

Dr. Hata's clinical research includes several ongoing clinical trials: new biologic and topical treatments for psoriasis, and studies on atopic dermatitis, acne and acne rosacea.

Her recent research is focused on the microbiome of the skin in people with atopic dermatitis, and includes several National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded studies examining the effects of an autologous and a targeted microbiome transplant on patients with atopic dermatitis. Since patients with atopic dermatitis lack "good bacteria," the transplant hopes to use "good bacteria" as a treatment for atopic dermatitis.

Dr. Hata completed her fellowship at UCLA School of Medicine and residencies at UCLA and Harvard Medical School. She earned her medical degree from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. She has published in top tier journals such as Science, Science Translational Medicine, Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology and the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.

Dr. Hata is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, UC San Diego Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), and the Society of Investigative Dermatology. She is a recipient of the Nature Medicine Publishing Best Abstract Award.

Dr. Hata's favorite pastime is hiking in national parks. She recently completed the Half Dome hike in Yosemite.
