About Reid Allen Abrams, MD

Reid Abrams, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic and hand surgeon. He is chief of Hand and Microvascular Surgery. Dr. Abrams' expertise includes treating severe upper limb trauma; nerve injuries; tendon injuries; arthritis of the elbow wrist and hand; carpal tunnel syndrome; Dupuytren's contracture; as well as fractures and sports injuries of the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand.

Strongly believing in the mission of UC San Diego Health, Dr. Abrams is dedicated to caring for the underinsured. He also treats patients who have sustained severe upper limb trauma at the county's first Level 1 Trauma Center.

Dr. Abrams serves as medical director of UC San Diego Health's Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion Surgical Center and Ambulatory Orthopedics Clinic, a member of UC San Diego Health's Leadership Council and Academy of Clinician Scholars.

He has been in Best Doctors in America, America's Top Doctors, and has been recognized as one of San Diego's "Top Doctors" by San Diego Magazine for more than a decade. Dr. Abrams has also been ranked in the top one percent of hand surgeons by US News and World Report. In 2017, he received the San Diego Orthopedic Society Founding Father Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Abrams has also been recognized as an outstanding educator, receiving the UC San Diego Resident Teaching award on four occasions from the Orthopaedic Surgery Department and two occasions from the Division of Plastic Surgery. As a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, he trains post-residency graduates through a highly sought after fellowship training program in Hand and Microvascular Surgery. His research has focused on upper extremity functional anatomy, peripheral nerve and tendon repair and elbow biomechanics. He has been a regional, national and international invited lecturer.

Dr. Abrams completed his fellowship work in pediatric orthopedics at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego and his hand surgery training at Brigham and Women's Hospital at Harvard School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency and earned his medical degree at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and hand surgery.

Dr. Abrams enjoys spending time with his family, skiing, bicycling, backpacking, western horseback riding and traveling.
