Roger Sur, MD, is a board-certified urologist and founder/director of the Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center at UC San Diego Health that focuses on surgical treatment, medical prevention and research into causes of kidney stones. He specializes in percutaneous nephrolithotomy using the latest, minimally invasive techniques.
As a professor in the Department of Urology, Dr. Sur instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where is also program director of the joint UC San Diego-Kaiser Endourology fellowship. He also works as a urologist at VA San Diego Healthcare System and as an associate professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, a military medical school.
Dr. Sur's research interests include antimicrobial use in kidney stone surgery, determining genetic causes of kidney stone disease, and minimizing radiation exposure for patients and health providers during endoscopic procedures. His work has appeared in medical and research publications, including Journal of Urology and Journal of Endourology. He has published numerous manuscripts and book chapters, and serves as content reviewer for the American Urological Association.
Dr. Sur is also involved in several clinical trials. He has won awards recognizing his clinical and teaching excellence, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Award.
Dr. Sur was named a top doctor in San Diego Magazine's "Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society in 2019 and recognized as a Castle Connelly Top Doctor in 2020.
Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Sur was a urologist at Sharp Grossmont Hospital and Alvarado Hospital. He served almost 20 years as a naval physician in numerous overseas deployments and retired as captain in Medical Corps, U.S. Navy Reserve. He completed an endourology fellowship at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and a residency in urology at Naval Medical Center San Diego. Dr. Sur earned his medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va. He is board certified in urology.
Dr. Sur is a member of the American Urological Association and the Resident and Associate Society of the American College of Surgeons.
