About Jess Mandel, MD
Jess Mandel, MD, is a board-certified pulmonologist who treats patients with a variety of respiratory conditions. His interests include pulmonary vascular disease, critical care medicine, and pulmonary vascular malformations such hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (a disorder that affects blood vessels).
He has treated many patients with COVID-19 and led efforts to assist health care professionals in Tijuana during the pandemic.
As the Kenneth M. Moser Professor of Medicine at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Mandel trains medical students, residents and fellows. He has authored two textbooks and a number of scholarly articles related to pulmonary and critical care medicine as well as medical education.
Dr. Mandel is also chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division and serves as vice chair for education in the Department of Internal Medicine. In this capacity he oversees the educational program for medical students.
Dr. Mandel completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. He did his residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, where he served as chief resident. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine.
Dr. Mandel was honored with a Presidential Citation by the San Diego County Medical Society for his involvement in their COVID response. More significantly, he helped organize relief efforts in Tijuana and Mexicali, reducing the cross-border spread of COVID and saving hundreds of lives.
He has been voted as a "top doc" by the San Diego County Medical Society/San Diego Magazine won multiple teaching awards.
Dr. Mandel is active in several leadership roles with the American Thoracic Society, including serving as chair of their international conference.
In his spare time, he enjoys cycling.
