About Theodore Chan, MD, FACEP, FAAEM

Theodore "Ted" Chan, MD, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician. He treats and cares for people admitted to the emergency department and urgent care, including those with life-threatening or critical conditions. This care may include evaluation, resuscitation, stabilization, and referring patients to appropriate specialty departments.

As chair and professor of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Chan is responsible for all clinical operations of the emergency departments at UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest and Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla. He also leads the department's development of academic and research programs at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

Dr. Chan's research interests include solutions for emergency department crowding, informatics in health care, and tactical, disaster and prehospital medicine. An advocate for health policy initiatives, he has worked with a number of community health, law enforcement, and state and federal agencies on issues such as emergency care for the elderly population and health information. Dr. Chan's work in these areas has been recognized at the White House.

He has authored and edited textbooks, including the Atlas of Emergency Procedures and ECG in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Chan is also a section editor for the Journal of Emergency Medicine and has coauthored over 150 articles, which have appeared in Journal of Emergency Medicine, Academic Emergency Medicine, and Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine, among others.

Dr. Chan completed a residency in emergency medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He completed an internship in internal medicine and earned his medical degree at UC San Francisco School of Medicine. He is board certified in emergency medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP) and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (FAAEM).

Dr. Chan has repeatedly been named a top doctor in San Diego Magazine's "Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society. He has also been awarded as a top peer reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine numerous times.
