About Paul Joseph Girard, MD
Paul Girard, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in orthopedic trauma and surgery to treat fractured or broken bones. He also cares for patients with complications arising from traumatic orthopedic injuries and has extensive experience in delivering care in emergency settings. Dr. Girard has particular interest and expertise in complex lower extremity reconstruction, post-traumatic deformity correction, and treatment of post-traumatic osteomyelitis.
As a professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Girard is involved in a variety of research topics related to understanding and improving orthopedic care.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 2007, Dr. Girard served as the assistant director of the orthopedic trauma service at Naval Medical Center San Diego. His military service includes being deployed in 2003 on the amphibious assault ship, USS Boxer, and the Mercy-class hospital ship, USNV Comfort, to support the global war on terrorism.
He was awarded the Academic Teaching Award from the U.S. Navy in 2005 and 2007 and remains active in training the next generation of orthopedists. Dr. Girard was awarded the UC San Diego Orthopaedic Surgery teaching award in 2008.
Dr. Girard completed a fellowship at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He completed residency training in orthopedic trauma at Naval Medical Center San Diego and Maricopa Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.
Outside of work, Dr. Girard enjoys being with his family, as well as boating and fishing. He has also valued participating in overseas medical missions sponsored by International Medical Alliance.
