About Scott Culver Thomson, MD

Scott Culver Thomson, MD, is a nephrologist at UC San Diego Health where his practice includes intensive care nephrology (acute dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapy in the critically ill), transplant nephrology, general nephrology, hypertension, clinical fluid-electrolyte and acid-base physiology, chronic hemodialysis, and hospital medicine.

As a professor of medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, he trains medical students and graduate students in nephrology. His research interests focus on the control of renal function, in particular the basic physiology of crosstalk between the glomerulus and proximal tubule.

Dr. Thomson has served on the American Physiologic Society on the AJP Renal editorial board, and as a fellow of the American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research, member of the AHA Western States Research Committee and chair of an AHA grant review study section. He is chief of nephrology at the VA San Diego Healthcare System, where he also serves as renal section chief.

Dr. Thomson trained in internal medicine and nephrology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, and also trained as a physician scientist with the National Institutes of Health. He earned his medical degree from UC San Diego School of Medicine.
