About Christopher Kahn, MD, MPH

Christopher Kahn, MD, MPH, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician. He treats and cares for people admitted to the emergency room and those with life-threatening or critical conditions. This care may include evaluation, resuscitation, stabilization, and referring patients to appropriate medical departments.

At UC San Diego Health, Dr. Kahn serves as the chief of the division of Emergency Medical Services and Disaster Medicine. He also serves as the fellowship director for Emergency Medical Services, the base hospital medical director, and the medical co-director for the Emergency Management program.

As an associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Kahn instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His research interests include emergency medical services, mass casualty triage, ambulance safety, and application of technology to emergency medical services. He serves as a section editor for the Annals of Emergency Medicine as well as the Western Journal of Emergency Medicine and his work has been published in Prehospital and Disaster Medicine and American Journal of Emergency Medicine, among others.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Kahn spent two years as a medical fellow at the Office of Emergency Medical Services at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. He subsequently served as the base hospital physician director at UC Irvine, where he also served as the emergency medical services director.

Dr. Kahn completed a fellowship in emergency medical services and disaster medical sciences and a residency in emergency medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa, Wis. In addition, he earned a master's in public health from UCLA School of Public Health. He is board certified in emergency medicine and emergency medical services.

Dr. Kahn is a member of DMAT CA-4, a disaster response team organized under the auspices of the National Disaster Medical System. He advocates regularly for patients receiving emergency medical care and emergency medical service organizations. Dr. Kahn is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians.

In his free time, Dr. Kahn enjoys spending time with his children, playing board games, and reading mystery and science fiction novels.
