Amber Sanchez, MD, is a board-certified nephrologist and medical director of the therapeutic apheresis program at UC San Diego Health.
She treats people for a variety of kidney-related conditions in both the clinic and the inpatient setting. She enjoys the practice of nephrology as the kidneys are important in the regulation of many key functions of the body, including blood pressure, anemia, vitamin D regulation and electrolyte control. Her approach to care emphasizes personalized treatment plans for each patient, and dedicating time during her visits to educate individuals about their particular diagnosis.
In addition to her nephrology practice, Dr. Sanchez performs apheresis, a medical procedure that involves passing a person's blood through a device that separates out a component of the blood from its other parts and returns the remainder of the blood into circulation. These procedures include plasmapheresis, which is used in a variety of neurologic, hematologic and kidney-related conditions, red blood cell exchange, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis, photopheresis, and white blood cell and platelet depletions
As a professor in the Department of Medicine, she trains medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Dr. Sanchez completed her fellowship and residency at UC San Diego School of Medicine and earned her medical degree from the University of Texas, Houston Health Science Center. She is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
She has been named a top doctor in San Diego Magazine's "Physicians of Exceptional Excellence" annual survey performed in collaboration with the San Diego County Medical Society.
