About Denise Kalmaz, MD
Denise Kalmaz, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist with expertise in general gastroenterology, along with a special interest in the evaluation of the small intestine. She directs UC San Diego Health's small bowel endoscopy program, performing capsule endoscopy, single balloon enteroscopy, and double balloon enteroscopy. These procedures aid in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding, small bowel tumors, and inflammatory bowel disease. As one of the few local gastroenterologists who performs balloon enteroscopy, Dr. Kalmaz sees referral patients from all over southern California.
Dr. Kalmaz is passionate about teaching and mentors students, residents and fellows. She currently directs the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at UC San Diego School of Medicine, overseeing 12 fellows.
She completed a residency in general internal medicine at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and a gastroenterology fellowship at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Kalmaz earned her medical degree from University of Texas at Houston. She is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.
Dr. Kalmaz has served on several committees for national organizations, including the American Gastroenterological Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
She and her husband call San Diego their home, along with their two young daughters.
