About Saima Aslam, MBBS

Saima Aslam, MBBS, is a board-certified infectious disease specialist. Her expertise is in caring for solid-organ transplant candidates and recipients as well as other immunocompromised individuals. Dr. Aslam directs UC San Diego Health's Solid Organ Transplant Infectious Diseases Service, which provides expert care in the prevention and management of infectious diseases in organ transplant donors and recipients.

As an associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Aslam instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Her research interests include transplant infectious diseases, catheter-related bacteremia and biofilm-based infection.

Dr. Aslam frequently speaks at medical conferences and she is the co-author of many articles, abstracts and book chapters. Her work includes international guidelines regarding treatment of fungal infections in heart and lung transplant recipients and her articles have appeared in The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and Clinical Infectious Diseases, among others. Dr. Aslam has also reviewed for many medical journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine, The Lancet and The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Aslam was an assistant professor in the Section of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. She was also a staff physician at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston.

She completed a fellowship in infectious diseases and a residency in internal medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Aslam earned her medical degree (MBBS) with honors from the Aga Khan University in Pakistan and holds a master's of science in clinical investigation from Baylor College of Medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease.

Dr. Aslam is a member of several professional organizations, including the Infectious Disease Society of America, the American Society of Transplantation and the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). She is also a member of the Infectious Disease Council for IHSLT.
