About James Killeen, MD

James Killeen, MD, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician who specializes in undersea and hyperbaric medicine. He treats and cares for patients in the emergency department and urgent care, including those with life-threatening or critical conditions. His care may include evaluation, resuscitation, stabilization, and referring patients to appropriate medical departments.

Dr. Killeen also has expertise in preventing and treating disease and injury in divers and individuals who work in altered atmospheric environments. At UC San Diego Health's Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care program, he assesses a person's fitness to dive, treats diving accidents, and employs hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to treat conditions such as decompression illness, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, non-healing wounds, and tissue damage from radiation, burns or infection.

Dr. Killeen is the director of Information Technology Services for the Department of Emergency Medicine and the chief medical officer for San Diego Health Connect. He helped design and implement the first health information exchange at UC San Diego Health that allows providers to access clinical information about patients from other treatment facilities. Dr. Killeen also helped implement the San Diego emergency medicine system (EMS) hub that links EMS patient records to hospitals in real-time.

He completed his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and earned his medical degree from the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. He is board certified in emergency medicine and hyperbaric medicine.
