About Irene Litvan, MD, FAAN, FANA
Irene Litvan, MD, is a board-certified neurologist and director of the Parkinson and Other Movement Disorders Center at UC San Diego Health. Dr. Litvan treats and diagnoses individuals with Parkinson's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, dementia with Lewy bodies, corticobasal degeneration, multiple system atrophy, Huntington's disease, essential tremor and frontotemporal dementias.
Dr. Litvan's research focuses on a better understanding of Parkinsonian and dementia disorders and on the search for novel therapeutic approaches, including symptomatic and disease modifying therapies as well as novel technology for better management of these diseases.
Dr. Litvan is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, a fellow of the American Neurological Association and is an internationally recognized expert in movement disorders and dementia.
She earned her medical degree from the Universidad de la República Oriental del Uruguay in Montevideo, Uruguay. Dr. Litvan completed two residency programs in neurology, first at the Hospital de la Sta Creu i St Pau in Barcelona, Spain, and afterwards at Georgetown University Hospital, Washington, DC, where she was also a chief resident.
Dr. Litvan completed a clinical fellowship in neuropsychology, and a research fellowship in dementia at the Hospital de la Sta Creu i St Pau, Barcelona, Spain. She competed a dementia and movement disorders research fellowship at the Experimental Therapeutics Branch, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in Bethesda, MD, as well as one year of psychiatry at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, DC. She was a senior staff fellow in neuroepidemiology, at the NINDS, NIH.
In addition to directing the Parkinson and Other Movement Disorders Center, Dr. Litvan is the Tasch Endowed Professor in Parkinson Disease Research at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Under her direction, the Center has become a Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, Research Center of Excellence in Lewy Body Dementia, and CurePSP Center of Care. These competitive designations are the highest recognition offered to a Parkinson's specialty clinic and represent the consensus of leaders in the field that it is among the world's leading centers for Parkinson's comprehensive and personalized care, top research, education and outreach.
