About Yu-Wei Chen, MD, MS

Yu-Wei Chen, MD, MS, is a board-certified medical oncologist who subspecializes in genitourinary (GU) oncology, treating prostate, kidney, bladder and testicular cancers. As a GU medical oncologist, Dr. Chen is trained in using systemic therapies (e.g., immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy, and chemotherapy) to treat patients with GU malignancies.

Dr. Chen practices cancer care through a multi-disciplinary approach, collaborating closely with a team of physicians from different specialties (e.g., urology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology) to ensure that the optimal treatment plan is developed for the patients. Originally from Taiwan and having lived in multiple locations across the United States (East Coast, Midwest, and South), Dr. Chen is looking forward to working with patients with diverse cultural backgrounds at UC San Diego Health.

As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Chen works with medical students, residents, and clinical fellows at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. His main research interest lies in developing new therapeutic agents through conducting and designing clinical trials in the field of GU oncology.

Dr. Chen was an awardee of the prestigious American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)/American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Methods in Clinical Cancer Research Workshop in 2021. In 2022, Dr. Chen was granted the ASCO Conquer Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award, and Annual Meeting Merit Award.

Dr. Chen completed his medical oncology fellowship followed by a GU oncology clinical research fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio and obtained his medical degree at the National Cheng Kung University College of Medicine in Taiwan. He also completed a master's degree in epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. Dr. Chen is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Dr. Chen is married and enjoys cooking, running, hiking, and exploring new restaurants with his wife, Meg. In addition to English, Dr. Chen also speaks Mandarin and Taiwanese.
