About Ambarish Athavale, MD
Ambarish Athavale, MD, is a board-certified nephrologist who specializes in treating acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, kidney stones with a special emphasis on treatment of primary nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the tiny filters in the kidneys) and vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels).
He has been designated as a nephrotic syndrome specialist by NephCure Kidney International and is the site principal investigator at UC San Diego for the NEPTUNE (nephrotic syndrome study network) study. His primary area of research is in the application of artificial intelligence techniques to improve the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease.
Dr. Athavale focuses on applying precision medicine for patients with kidney disease, particularly in the field of nephrotic syndrome, glomerulonephritis, and vasculitis. He feels we are on the cusp of a therapeutic revolution in the field of nephrology and finds it very rewarding to be able to champion the move toward precision medicine in kidney disease.
He completed a fellowship in nephrology at University of Illinois College of Medicine and residency training in internal medicine at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, both in Chicago. Dr. Athavale earned his medical degree from University of Mumbai in India.
He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology and is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation.
In his free time, Dr. Athavale enjoys playing chess. He speaks Hindi and Marathi fluently.
