About Matthew Tsai, MD, PhD

Matthew Tsai, MD, PhD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist who treats people with inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and indeterminate colitis, other immune mediated diseases of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including microscopic colitis, collagenous colitis, immune complications from cancer treatment (checkpoint inhibitor enterocolitis), and other gastrointestinal conditions.

As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Tsai trains medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has previously conducted research in immune responses in the GI tract, and his work has appeared in publications, including Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Immunity, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and Science Immunology.

Dr. Tsai completed a post-doctoral fellowship in inflammatory bowel disease and mucosal immunology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he also did a fellowship in gastroenterology and a residency in internal medicine. He earned his medical degree and a PhD in microbiology and immunology from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is a board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. He is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association.
