Matthew MacFarlane, MD, is a board-certified physician who provides primary and preventive care to all adults, though specializes in caring for LGBTQ individuals and those living with HIV, holding the title of an American Academy of HIV Medicine Specialist. He also specializes in gender-affirming care for gender diverse individuals.
Dr. MacFarlane provides preventive care, promoting overall health and wellbeing, as well as diagnoses and treatment for acute and chronic diseases. He enjoys getting to know his patients deeply, enabling him to work together with them to create individualized treatment plans.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, he was a clinical assistant professor at University of Southern California and a clinical educator in primary care at Los Angeles General Medical Center.
Dr. MacFarlane completed his internship and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he stayed for an additional year as chief resident. He completed medical school at Temple University School of Medicine. During his time there, he concurrently obtained a Master of Arts in urban bioethics to understand the interplay of the social determinants of health on health outcomes and how to apply this knowledge to improving clinical practice.
In his free time, Dr. MacFarlane finds any excuse to be outside, enjoying hiking, running and pickleball. He also enjoys photography and creating photobooks of his travels.
