About Alexander Yang, MD, MS

Alexander Yang, MD, MS, is a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist who specializes in treating acute and chronic liver diseases including viral hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcohol-associated liver disease, autoimmune and cholestatic liver disease, as well as cirrhosis and liver cancer. He also works with transplant surgeons in the evaluation of liver transplant patients and post operative care of liver transplant patients.

As an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, he instructs students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine within the Division of Gastroenterology. His research and clinical interests include providing multidisciplinary care for patients with alcoholic-associated liver disease, liver dysfunction in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (sometimes referred to as bone marrow transplant), autoimmune and cholestatic liver disease (including autoimmune hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis PSC, and primary biliary cholangitis PBC), as well as liver manifestations in rare diseases.

He enjoys hepatology because he gets to break down complex liver problems and communicate with his patients to share his understanding and his passion. He is driven by the opportunity to build relationships with his patients with chronic liver disease and improve their condition. Dr. Yang conducts research in alcohol-associated liver disease, viral hepatitis as well as liver dysfunction in hematopoietic stem cell transplant. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals.

He completed his internal medicine residency at LAC+USC, his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Maryland-National Institutes of Health Clinical Scholars Program and his transplant hepatology fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned his medical degree from University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine.

In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family exploring the outdoors and honing his skills as a portrait photographer. Having grown in up Taiwan, he is fluent in Mandarin.
