About Sara Grossi, MD

Sara Grossi, MD, is a breast surgical oncologist and board-certified general surgeon who specializes in all aspects of breast health including benign, high-risk, premalignant and malignant breast pathologies. She performs breast conservation surgery/lumpectomy using the latest innovative localization technologies. She also performs nipple sparing mastectomies and the nipple delay procedure in appropriate candidates in addition to skin sparing mastectomies and axillary surgery. Dr. Grossi performs flat aesthetic closures and uses hidden scar techniques, working closely with plastic and reconstructive surgeons to offer women the best possible cosmetic, functional and safe oncologic outcomes.

She provides a multidisciplinary patient-centered approach to deliver the highest quality of evidence-based, comprehensive, and compassionate whole person care. Dr. Grossi has a special interest in human factors, innovation, and quality improvement projects in the health care setting with the goal of fostering the provision of high quality, efficient state of the art medical care. She spearheaded a pilot study in a breast surgery clinic examining patient-reported outcomes and she has collaborated on numerous clinical translational research projects.

Dr. Grossi's clinical research interests include de-escalation of sentinel lymph node surgery in the elderly, examining gender affirming mastectomy and masculinizing hormone therapy effect on breast tissue, and examining histologic response to neoadjuvant therapy in breast tissue. Her research has been published in journals including Annals of Surgical Oncology, Journal of the American College of Surgeons, The American Surgeon and Journal of Surgical Research.

As an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Dr. Grossi derives great joy and personal fulfillment in teaching medical students, residents, fellows and colleagues at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

She is a member of several professional societies including the American Medical Women's Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Grossi completed fellowship training in breast surgical oncology at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. She completed her residency in general surgery at Loma Linda University Health. Dr. Grossi earned her medical degree from Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Miami. She is board certified in general surgery.

Dr. Grossi has played the viola professionally for many years and continues to play in her free time. She also enjoys writing and reading poetry, long distance cycling, and hiking. She speaks Spanish and French conversationally.
