Kyle Backer, MD, is a board-certified pathologist who specializes in hematopathology cases, mostly bone marrows and flow cytometry, at UC San Diego Health.
As an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology, he teaches residents and fellows in both pathology and hematology/oncology at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
Dr. Backer is also a staff pathologist at VA San Diego Health System where he serves as director of their flow cytometry lab which handles specimens for nine VA hospitals. He was inspired to work at the VA by his father and both grandfathers' service as military officers.
He completed residency training in hematopathology at UC San Diego School of Medicine and residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham, Ala. Dr. Backer earned his medical degree from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology and hematopathology.
Dr. Backer is a member of the College of American Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the Society for Hematopathology.
In his free time, Dr. Backer enjoys surfing, skiing, running, college sports and history.
