About Maria Laura Gomez, MD, OD
Maria Laura Gomez, MD, OD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and ophthalmic research associate at the Jacobs Retina Center. She specializes in visual evaluations of patients with ophthalmic diseases and is trained in refractive surgery, as well as general ophthalmology. Her areas of focus are understanding visual function in macular degeneration, diabetes and dry eye using novel computerized medical instruments and diagnostics.
Prior to joining UC San Diego, Dr. Gomez worked at the Barraquer Eye Institute in Colombia, Castroviejo Institute in Spain and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. She has experience in the FDA approval process and clinical trials of surgical and medical ophthalmic devices. In addition, she has published many important papers in optics and visual function in the human eye, particularly in patients with refractive and retinal surgery.
Dr. Gomez has an international education and completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Barraquer Institute of America in Bogota, Colombia. She also completed several clinical fellowships abroad at Tel HaShomer Medical Center in Israel, a fellowship in refractive surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at UC San Diego. Dr. Gomez Freeman earned her medical degrees at Rosario University and Barraquer Institute of America in Bogota, Colombia. At UC San Diego, she also earned her master's degree in clinical research. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, International Society of Refractive Surgery, American Society of Optometry and Ophthalmology and American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Gomez is fluent in Spanish, English and French.
