About Cory R. Weissman, MD

Cory R. Weissman, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist whose focus is providing care for patients with treatment-resistant mental illness. He has experience treating patients with severe mood, psychotic and substance use disorders in inpatient and outpatients settings. He believes that advancements in neuroscience will help progress and personalize interventional treatments in order to lead to better and faster outcomes for patients struggling with severe illness. As the neuroscience develops and treatments become more fine-tuned, effective interventions will be available that are palatable, tolerable and make sense in light of an individual's life story. Fusion of interventional treatments with appropriate psychotherapy treatments will be essential to reach this goal.

Dr. Weissman has strong clinical and research interests in interventional psychiatry. During his fellowship, he developed expertise in the delivery of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), and magnetic seizure therapy (MST). He continues to develop his clinical skills in a variety of interventional treatments while also now completing a PhD in pharmacology and toxicology.

He serves as an assistant professor and head of interventional psychiatry at UC San Diego within the interventional psychiatry clinic. His current research focus is on the development of novel treatments for suicidality in patients with severe mental illness. He has published on the use of rTMS and MST for patients with treatment-resistant major depressive disorder (TRD) and co-morbid suicidality.

Dr. Weissman is also excited about the promise of psychedelic compounds and other interventional pharmacologic agents as psychiatric treatments. He has published on the potential role of psychedelics as treatments for suicidality, and hopes to continue this line of work within the UC San Diego interventional psychiatry program.

He completed a fellowship in brain stimulation at the University of Toronto, where he also completed a residency in psychiatry. Dr. Weissman earned his medical degree from University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

On a personal level, Dr. Weissman likes to maintain an active lifestyle. He enjoys hiking, playing basketball, and hopes to learn how to surf. He also enjoys checking out local breweries and spending quality time with his family and friends.
