Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, MD, MS, FACOG

Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, MD, is a board-certified perinatologist who specializes in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists, also known as maternal-fetal medicine specialists, care for patients who may have obstetric complications with gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and thrombophilias. She is internationally recognized for her work in this area, with a primary focus on preterm birth, both in prevention and in the use of antenatal corticosteroids, or steroids.

Dr. Gyamfi-Bannerman joined UC San Diego School of Medicine in July 2021 as chair and professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. She finds it rewarding to be part of an academic medical center where leading edge research and clinical care are combined – a place where patients have the opportunity to enroll in clinical trials and receive life-saving treatments.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, she was a professor at Columbia University where she mentored faculty, fellows, residents and students as vice chair for faculty development. She also served as director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Training Program, one of the largest of its kind in the country, overseeing the training and development of future maternal-fetal medicine physicians and increasing the program's diversity.

As a National Institutes of Health-funded researcher, Dr. Gyamfi-Bannerman has conducted multiple clinical trials and has published numerous research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, including JAMA and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has been invited to speak about her research locally, nationally and internationally. She has served on several high-profile, professional committees and has been recognized with multiple honors and awards. She was named twice for American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Excellence, received the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine research award and was elected to the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. She was recently named president-elect of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the leading society and national voice for more than 5,500 highly qualified maternal-fetal medicine subspecialist providers.

Dr. Gyamfi-Bannerman completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital. She completed her medical degree at University of Miami School of Medicine and a master's degree in biostatistics during her time in faculty at Columbia University.

In her free time, Dr. Gyamfi-Bannerman enjoys exploring San Diego's local hiking trails and beaches with her family.
