About Samantha Thomson, MD, FACOG, IBCLC

Samantha Thomson, MD, is a board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist with a passion for full spectrum women's health care. In the office setting, she provides maternity care, well woman care, and treatment of a wide range of gynecologic concerns including abnormal uterine bleeding, ovarian cysts, fibroids, abnormal Pap smears, pelvic pain, family planning, adolescent gynecology and lactation disorders. She provides inpatient obstetrical care and emergent gynecologic care as a hospitalist, as well. She has a special interest in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.

Dr. Thomson enjoys walking alongside her patients in various stages of life and helping them meet their health goals. She believes it is a privilege to be invited into women's lives during both their routine care and through large transitions – whether that is adolescence, family planning, childbearing, menopause, or beyond. She is a strong advocate of patient-centered, evidence-based care, as well as patient autonomy and education. She also enjoys teaching her future colleagues in the form of resident education.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Thomson worked as a full-scope obstetrician and gynecologist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. She completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University in St. Louis/Barnes Jewish Hospital. She earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and is a board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC).

Dr. Thomson is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a member of the International Board of Certified Lactation Examiners and the Institute for the Advancement of Breastfeeding and Lactation Education.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, hiking, and checking out local restaurants. She hopes to one-day return to enjoying international travel and scuba diving when her children are older.
