About Monique Montigny, LCSW, LAADC

Monique Montigny, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker and a licensed advanced alcohol and drug counselor in outpatient psychiatric services. She is a member of UC San Diego Health's Addiction Recovery and Treatment Services, which uses a harm-reduction approach to provide care for all stages of recovery from substance use disorders. Ms. Montigny works with patients who struggle with co-occurring diagnoses, including substance use disorders, major depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorders and other types of mental illness.

Ms. Montigny takes a strong patient-centered, evidence-based approach to treatment. She understands the necessity of meeting her patients where they are in their process of healing and recognizes that a patient's readiness for change lies within. She is passionate about empowering her patients to see their full capabilities. Ms. Montigny is also a strong advocate for family involvement when treating patients and firmly believes that addiction is a family disease, not just affecting the patient. As a result, her focus is on educating patients and their loved ones about the disease of addiction and mental illness, empowering all involved to actively participate in the healing process. She believes education and information are keys to gaining the tools necessary for success and lasting recovery.

Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Ms. Montigny had the privilege of working in all levels of care since starting her own practice, including group practice, non-profit organizations, residential treatment, acute psychiatric hospitals and methadone clinics. She has specialized in the treatment of substance use disorders since 2003.

Originally from New Hampshire, Ms. Montigny stayed close to home for school, obtaining both her master's and bachelor's degrees in social work from the University of New Hampshire. She is a member of the Association of Social Work Boards, the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals and the National Association for Addiction Professionals.

In her free time, Ms. Montigny enjoys being outdoors, hiking, walking, and biking. She has a strong love for music and an extensive musical performance history. She performed vocally in a 7-piece rock and roll cover band for 18 years, trained four years in opera and has an appreciation for all genres of music. Ms. Montigny participated in drama club and loves karaoke, too.
