Nikhil K. Murthy, MD, is a neurosurgeon who specializes in peripheral nerve conditions of the upper and lower extremity including the surgical treatment of traumatic nerve injuries, nerve compression, nerve tumors, and nerve reconstruction for spinal cord injury. He is passionate about peripheral nerve surgery because it gives him the opportunity to really understand patients' functional goals and find ways to make a difference in their daily lives through a personalized surgical approach.
As an assistant professor at UC San Diego School of Medicine, he is involved in training medical students, residents and fellows in the Department of Neurological Surgery. Dr. Murthy's academic interests include nerve regeneration, peripheral nerve tumors, peripheral nerve imaging, medical education and health care delivery.
Dr. Murthy completed a fellowship in peripheral nerve surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. and a fellowship in complex and reconstructive spinal surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, where he also completed his residency in neurological surgery. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, District of Columbia. Dr. Murthy also has a master's degree in physiology and biophysics from Georgetown University and an MBA from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Ill.
His personal interests include drumming, hiking and exploring the outdoors with his family.
