About Aditya Bagrodia, MD, FACS

Aditya Bagrodia, MD, is a board-certified urologist who specializes in detecting, treating and preventing genitourinary cancer. He is experienced in surgical and nonsurgical treatments for all urologic malignancies, including adrenal, upper tract, renal, bladder, prostate, penile and testicular cancers. He also has expertise in minimally invasive approaches to urologic surgery.

He is dedicated to guiding his patients on a path that is best for them – both in terms of survival and quality of life – including navigating the latest treatments. "Is it appropriate and safe to wait and see if a tumor becomes aggressive? Or would it be better to proceed with surgery, radiation or participation in clinical trials of a new therapy? As we learn more about the nature of cancer, we can help each patient make highly personalized treatment decisions," he said.

Whatever the particular condition and the ultimate treatment plan, he believes that a collaborative approach to care is essential.

As an associate professor in the Department of Urology, Dr. Bagrodia trains medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he leads the genitourinary disease team. He has focused his clinical and research interests on understanding molecular attributes of germ cell tumors, which cause testicular cancer, with the goal of ultimately improving treatments and clinical care. He also has been actively involved in understanding and overcoming societal and epidemiological barriers to optimal care in testicular cancer patients.

Dr. Bagrodia has been involved in clinical trials for patients with testicular cancer and has conducted extensive research in urologic oncology, primarily in biomarker profiles and molecular signatures of urologic tumors as predictors of clinical outcomes. He has been funded through intramural research grants and also via competitive grants from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) and the National Institutes of Health.

He is the principal author or co-author of more than 150 articles in peer-reviewed publications such as Journal of Clinical Oncology, Nature Genetics, European Urology, Journal of Urology, Urologic Oncology, and Urology. Dr. Bagrodia is also a reviewer for many of these publications, as well as for the British Journal of Urology, Journal of Clinical Pathology and the Annals of Surgical Oncology. He also has contributed to several textbooks.

Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Bagrodia cared for patients at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where he was the director of urologic oncology, and taught at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, also in Dallas.

Dr. Bagrodia completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He also did a fellowship in clinical research techniques at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he finished his residency in urology. He holds a medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis, Tenn. He is board certified in urology.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of many professional organizations, including the American Urological Association, Society of Urology Oncology, Society of Basic Urologic Research, Indian American Urologic Association and Alpha Omega Alpha. He also speaks Hindi.

In his free time, Dr. Bagrodia enjoys traveling, soccer, running, tennis, squash, table tennis, cooking and spending time outdoors with his family.
