About Ryan Anson, MS, NP-C
Ryan Anson, MS, RN, is a board-certified nurse practitioner (NP-C) who provides primary and specialized care at the Owen Clinic for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. He sees patients who need HIV and general primary care, treatment of acute and chronic diseases (including hepatitis B, hepatitis C, substance use disorders, hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung disease and sexually transmitted infections) and information on HIV prevention.
Before moving to San Diego, Mr. Anson worked at East Bay Advanced Care in Oakland, Calif. where he was the director of the clinic's HIV prevention program and the emergency department's HIV-HCV routine screening initiative. His clinical and research interests include the treatment of hepatitis C and acute HIV infection. He began his healthcare career as an emergency medicine technician (EMT) and psychiatric nurse.
Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, Mr. Anson traveled the world as a freelance photojournalist for eleven years. He covered political, cultural and social issues in North America, Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa for TIME, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Bloomberg News andAgence-France Presse. He published two books about youth gangs and the Islamic insurgency in the southern Philippines, where he lived for two years. Mr. Anson found his journalism background in bearing witness and listening to individual stories extraordinarily useful when he transitioned to advanced-practice nursing.
Mr. Anson earned his master's degree in adult-gerontology advance practice nursing with minors in HIV/AIDS and psychiatric care at UC San Francisco. He is certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of HIV Medicine, and is a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care.
Outside of work, Mr. Anson enjoys mountain biking and hiking. He speaks conversational Spanish.
