About Nikki D. Switzer, MD

Nikki Switzer, MD, is a board-certified internal medicine physician, and also board certified in hospice and palliative care. She provides primary care for adults, including preventive care and diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic diseases. Dr. Switzer treats adults through the concierge medicine program at UC San Diego Health. Concierge Medicine is a primary care option that requires an annual fee and offers enhanced services, extended amenities and 24/7 access.

Dr. Switzer believes the foundation of providing good care, whether at a system level as with running a hospital, or with an individual's outpatient care, lies in the strength of the relationship between the patient and their provider. She has found working as a team is a more successful approach to providing the best overall care. Patients have better outcomes when they have a primary care physician who advocates for their best care both in person and with other medical specialists that they may need to see in coordinating their overall care. Dr. Switzer is a strong advocate of preventive care for those conditions that have directly impacting treatments. She also uses her background in palliative care to try to find the best ways to manage conditions that cannot yet be cured so the individual with a chronic disease can still live a fulfilling life.

Prior to moving back to California and joining the UC San Diego Health Concierge Medicine practice, she was medical director of Honokaa and Ka'u Hospitals on Hawaii Island. She also provided inpatient care to hospitalized patients as well as primary care to nursing home residents. She taught and provided geriatrics training to rotating family practice residents in Hawaii, and served on the medical Executive Committee for the East Coast of Hawaii Island. She has a longstanding interest in the management and care of complex medical conditions.

In her free time, Dr. Switzer enjoys spending with her husband, four kids and extended family, as well as spending time in the garden trying her hand at sustainable living, and playing with their animals.
