About Ian M. Foran, MD
Ian Foran, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle disorders. He has an interest in sports-related injuries, arthroscopy of the foot and ankle, ankle replacement, cartilage restoration, arthritis, bunions, deformity, and fractures about the foot and ankle. He is the current head physician for the City Ballet of San Diego and a house doctor for the San Diego Symphony.
Dr. Foran has an abiding interest in medical education, research, and quality improvement. He chairs the orthopedic department's peer review committee. He has authored multiple original science papers, book chapters, and instructional courses and serves as an expert reviewer for the preeminent journals Foot and Ankle International and Foot and Ankle Orthopaedics. He serves nationally as a committee board member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS). Dr. Foran is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery (AAOS).
Dr. Foran completed fellowship specialty training in foot and ankle surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago under the guidance of preeminent surgeons Drs. Simon Lee, Johnny Lin, Kamran Hamid, and George Holmes. He completed residency orthopedic surgery training at UC San Diego. He served his final year as peer-elected chief resident and won both the resident teaching and resident research awards. Dr. Foran obtained his medical doctorate at the UC Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine. There he received numerous letters of distinction, including those in surgery and internal medicine, and received admission into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society. He also earned his undergraduate degree at UC Los Angeles, graduating summa cum laude with a degree in physiologic science.
Outside of work Dr. Foran enjoys tennis, hiking, making espresso, sailing, jazz and classical music, and spending time with his family.
