Nicole Teal, MD, MPH, is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist who cares for birthing people with high-risk pregnancies. This includes people who have chronic medical conditions prior to pregnancy, those who develop an acute condition during pregnancy and those whose fetus is expected to have health complications.
Dr. Teal's expertise is in managing illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension, diagnosing fetal abnormalities by ultrasound, managing twin and triplet pregnancies and treating placental disorders. She also handles complications that may happen during labor and delivery.
Dr. Teal is passionate about accompanying birthing people and their families through the journey of pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. She aims to provide exceptional care for all patients with strong emphasis on respect, empathy, shared decision-making and reproductive justice.
Additionally, Dr. Teal is a Women's Reproductive Health (WRHR) Scholar. The WRHR is a mentored career development award (K12) through the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Teal's current research focuses on using implementation science as a strategy to improve obstetric health equity. Her prior work has been in the areas of racial and language concordance with obstetric providers, respectful maternity care, hypertension in pregnancy and induction of labor outcomes.
Dr. Teal completed fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed residency training in obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at UC San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Teal earned her medical degree from University of South Florida Health Colleges, where she also obtained a master's degree in public health.
Outside of work, Dr. Teal enjoys surfing, sports, traveling and spending time in the San Diego sun with her wife and son.
