About John Lane, MD

John Lane, MD, is a board-certified vascular surgeon who treats patients with conditions related to blood vessels, including thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease and aneurysms, spine exposure and hemodialysis access. He also has a special interest in angioplasty, atherectomy, carotid endarterectomy and transcervical carotid artery revascularization (TCAR).

As a professor in the Department of Surgery, he trains medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine, where he also serves as the program director for the vascular surgery fellowship program and the residency training program. Additionally, Dr. Lane has held leadership positions as director of endovascular surgery at UC San Diego Health and chief of vascular surgery at the VA San Diego Healthcare System.

Dr. Lane's research interests include carotid stents and endovascular aneurysm sealing and comparing the effectiveness of endovascular treatment verses surgical treatment for critical limb ischemia (CLI), which are the focus of clinical trials in which he participates. His work has appeared in medical and research publications, including the Journal of Vascular Surgery and Annals of Vascular Surgery.

Having a particular interest in health care disparities, Dr. Lane has conducted research on ethnic and gender disparities in the treatment of patients with stroke and aortic aneurysm, and helped implement advanced vascular care in indigent populations. He has presented at national and international events on issues related to visceral aneurysms, carotid stenting, drug eluting stent technology and best practices for aneurysm sealing.

He was listed among the Best Doctors in America several times. He also has contributed chapters to textbooks and peer-reviewed articles for several medical journals.

Before joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Lane was an associate professor of surgery at UC Irvine, and the chief of vascular surgery at the San Francisco General Hospital (now known as the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center) at UC San Francisco, where he also was an assistant professor of surgery.

Dr. Lane completed fellowships in vascular surgery and endovascular surgery at UCLA Medical Center. Before that, he completed his residency in general surgery and earned his medical degree at UCLA School of Medicine. He holds a Master of Science degree in biological sciences from Stanford University. He is board certified in vascular surgery.

Dr. Lane is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and holds memberships in many professional organizations, including the Society for Vascular Surgery, the Western Vascular Surgery Society, and the American Board of Vascular Surgery.
