About Jonathan Hsu, MD

Jonathan Hsu, MD, is board-certified cardiologist who subspecializes in electrophysiology. He takes care of patients with all types of fast (tachycardia), slow (bradycardia), and irregular heart rhythm disorders, including both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias.

Dr. Hsu strives to give excellent care to his patients by providing open communication and individualized treatment. He makes every effort to provide evidence-based care while also striving to ensure patient satisfaction. Dr. Hsu has a strong interest in both medical and procedural management of atrial fibrillation (Afib or AF), atrial flutter (AFL), supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular fibrillation (VF), and syncope. He is skilled at catheter ablation for arrhythmia treatment, including the more common arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, premature ventricular contractions, ventricular tachycardia and supraventricular tachycardia.

Dr. Hsu treats all types of supraventricular tachycardias, including atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT), atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT), Wolff- Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, atrial tachycardia (AT), and junctional tachycardia (JT). He is also an expert in specific heart rhythm syndromes including Long QT syndrome, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HOCM or HCM), Brugada Syndrome, Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia / Cardiomyopathy (ARVD or ARVC), as well as arrhythmias related to coronary artery disease (CAD), congenital heart disease and cardiac sarcoidosis.

Besides using catheter ablation to treat atrial fibrillation, Dr. Hsu also has a special interest in stroke reduction in patients with AF using warfarin (Coumadin) or newer blood thinners (non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants). He is trained and able to perform newer procedural techniques for left atrial appendage (LAA) exclusion, including the WATCHMAN left atrial appendage occlusion device and epicardial ligation of the left atrial appendage with the LARIAT device.

Dr. Hsu's expertise also includes implantation and management of cardiac rhythm devices, including implantable loop recorders, pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy CRT (biventricular BiV) devices.

As a professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Hsu educates and mentors medical students, residents and fellows. He is also a clinical research investigator with advanced training, and his interests include epidemiology and clinical outcomes in patients with all types of cardiac arrhythmias. Dr. Hsu's research has resulted in publications in medical journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, as well as several top cardiology journals, including Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Circulation.

He completed a residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowship training in general cardiology and advanced subspecialty training in cardiac electrophysiology at UCSF School of Medicine, where he also obtained a master's degree in clinical research. Dr. Hsu earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology.

Dr. Hsu has achieved fellow status at the top cardiology and cardiac rhythm societies, including distinction as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA), and fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society (FHRS).
