About Lisa M. Stellwagen, MD, FAAP
Lisa Stellwagen, MD, is a newborn specialist and board-certified pediatrician. She has been a pediatrician for 30 years, both in community and hospital settings, and is the medical director of the Newborn Service at UC San Diego Health. Her clinical expertise includes infant nutrition, breast milk feeding, and medical care of newborns.
A professor of in the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine, she also works to educate families, medical students, pediatric residents and neonatal fellows about newborn care and the importance of infant health and nutrition. Her research interests include human milk quality and storage, maternal milk production, and promoting human milk feeding to improve infant health.
Reflecting her dedication to breastfeeding, Dr. Stellwagen played a lead role in UC San Diego Health's Baby Friendly certification. She and colleagues also started the medical center's SPIN (Supporting Premature Infant Nutrition) Program, which brings together lactation services, dietary services, physical therapy, nurses and physicians to outcomes for newborns in intensive care.
Dr. Stellwagen and colleagues initiated the San Diego Mothers' Milk Bank and continue their efforts to educate San Diego families about the importance of breastfeeding to infant health. They have recently launched an app 'Mothers' Milk' to educate and engage the community about infant nutrition, breastfeeding, and milk donation.
Dr. Stellwagen completed residency training in pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard Medical School), where she also served as chief resident. She earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Stellwagen is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP) and on the executive board of its section on breastfeeding. She is a member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine.
