About Akbar Rahman, MD, MPH

Akbar Rahman, MD, MPH, is a board-certified family physician who sees patients of all ages - children, adolescents, and adults. From routine check-ups for children, to well-woman care, to the care of more medically complex patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, he believes in taking a thorough, patient-centered approach to those under his care.

Prior to coming to UC San Diego, Dr. Rahman spent time working in federally qualified health centers in Los Angeles and Long Beach, with medically underserved communities. He also spent over a year working in a public hospital in South Africa, to help alleviate that country's critical shortage of physicians. Dr. Rahman remains committed to alleviating health care disparities both domestically and abroad. Dr. Rahman has also served on the board of the National Physicians' Alliance, a non-profit organization committed to health justice and transparency in health care.

Dr. Rahman went to medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he also completed his Masters in Public Health. He completed his residency training at Long Beach Memorial Family Medicine Residency, where he served as chief resident.

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Dr. Rahman enjoys traveling, skiing, running (though not as much as he should), reading, writing and spending time with his wife and family.
