His secondary research focuses on clinical trials of therapeutics in multiple sclerosis. He has also developed the use of internet portals for people with multiple sclerosis, providing patients with resources and information to better manage their disease.

Dr. Kinkel has written numerous book chapters and published over 100 articles in medical journals, including Annals of Neurology, the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Multiple Sclerosis Journal, Neurology, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
