Robert Owens, MD, is a board-certified sleep medicine and critical care doctor. He is clinically active in critical care, pulmonary and sleep medicine, caring for patients with acute respiratory conditions and sleep disorders. In the Sleep Medicine Center, he provides a full spectrum of therapeutic and diagnostic services for people who have sleep related disorders such as narcolepsy, insomnia, sleep apnea and rapid eye movement (REM) behavior disorder.
Dr. Owens has led several NIH-funded research projects and given presentations nationally and internationally on topics like sleep-disordered breathing and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), nocturnal asthma, and emerging treatments for obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Owens is currently an associate editor for the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, and serves as an ad hoc reviewer for many national and international medical journals including Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, International Journal of COPD, and American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Owens was an instructor and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, where he trained medical students in sleep medicine and pulmonary and critical care medicine. In Brigham and Women's Hospital's Sleep Disorders Research Program, Dr. Owens supervised graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in clinical research, laboratory techniques and experimental design.
In 2009 Dr. Owens was awarded the Excellence in Tutoring Award from Harvard Medical School Academy. He has received awards in patient care and in sleep research from Massachusetts General Hospital and the American Thoracic Society.
Dr. Owens completed his fellowship training in both pulmonary and critical care and sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and received his medical degree from Columbia University in New York, NY. Dr. Owens is board-certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, pulmonary disease, and sleep medicine.
Dr. Owens is an active member of several professional societies including the American Thoracic Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
