About Kamyar Afshar, DO
Kamyar Afshar, DO, is a board-certified pulmonary and critical care physician who specializes in complex lung diseases and lung transplantation. His expertise includes treating cystic fibrosis (CF) and non-CF bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, as well as rare lung diseases such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and tuberous sclerosis complex. Dr. Afshar is director of Lung Transplantation at UC San Diego Health.
As an associate professor in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Afshar instructs medical students, residents and fellows. His research interests include cystic fibrosis and lung transplant medicine.
He has published numerous articles, and his work has appeared in Annals of Transplantation and CHEST, among others. Dr. Afshar also reviews for numerous medical journals and serves as a contributing editor for Journal of Pulmonary and Respiratory Medicine.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Afshar was an assistant professor at Keck School of Medicine of USC and director of the Center for Advanced Lung Disease. Dr. Afshar also served as the medical director of the Pediatric Lung Transplant Program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Afshar completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine and a residency in internal medicine at LAC + USC Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from Midwestern University's Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Afshar is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine.
He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplant, the American Thoracic Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, among others.
Dr. Afshar grew up in San Diego and attended Patrick Henry High School. He and his wife, Parastoo, have a daughter and a son.
