About Hao Howie Tran, MD

Howie Tran, MD, is a board-certified cardiologist specializing in treating advanced heart failure patients. Dr. Tran is the Medical Director of Cardiogenic Shock, Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Left Ventricular Assist Device.

He specializes in treating complex cases of heart disease leading to heart transplantation or mechanical circulatory support devices.
Dr. Tran earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and transitioned to the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University for an internship, residency, and general cardiology fellowship. He then completed his medical training in advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and transplant cardiology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.

As an Associate Professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Tran instructs medical students, residents and fellows at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in heart failure, left ventricular assist devices, and heart transplantation, as well as review articles, editorials and book chapters. Dr. Tran is a national leader in cardiogenic shock and participates in educational efforts on a national and international scale. Additionally, Dr. Tran serves as the program director for the Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship, the associate program director of the General Cardiology Fellowship, and the medical director of Information Services for the Cardiovascular Division.

Dr. Tran is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Physicians.
