About Daniel L. Gramins, MD
Daniel Gramins, MD, is a board-certified cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon who also serves as surgical director of the cardiothoracic surgery program at TriCity Medical Center. He specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases of the heart and vasculature, lungs and chest wall. In addition to conventional open surgery on the heart, lungs, and major vascular structures, Dr. Gramins performs minimal incision aortic valve surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, video-assisted thoracic surgery, and endovascular interventions on the thoracic and abdominal aorta.
Dr. Gramins also has a special interest in adult chest wall surgery, including pectus deformity correction, sternal reconstruction after complications of sternotomy, and chest wall trauma.
As a faculty member in the UC San Diego School of Medicine, Dr. Gramins trains medical students, surgery residents, and thoracic surgery fellows. The majority of his teaching activity is concentrated at the San Diego VA Medical Center, where he is also a staff surgeon in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Section.
Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, Dr. Gramins was a captain in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, and served as head of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, as well as a staff surgeon in the Division of Vascular Surgery. He deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan as a vascular and trauma surgeon, and served as head of surgery at the NATO hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Dr. Gramins completed his fellowship training in thoracic surgery and vascular surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, and his residency in general surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He earned his medical degree From Georgetown University School of Medicine and is board-certified in vascular surgery and thoracic and cardiac surgery.
He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
